Kalari Martial Arts

7 minutes of some amazing Martial Arts by my friends in Kerala, South India. It's from a very, very rough video - remember those? filmed by one camera at a time, so picture quality is rough. But you should be able to geta feel for the martial art form itself.

Kalari Payattu originates from the South Western Indian state of Kerala and dates back to 12th Century CE. This makes it one of the oldest form of martial arts in the world. Its influence on Eastern Martial arts like Kung Fu is also believed to have coincided with the spread of the teachings of Buddhism as Kerala was then a very common hub for trade way before pre colonialist days and many Chinese had passed through that way.

Lol? It was one of the most ancient martial arts on Earth... not new in any sense. That handsome weapon he weilds is a Urumi, a very flexible set of steel swords flexible enough to be twisted into a coil...but sharp enough to cut flesh. I wonder why it is not taught as much as East Asian martial arts? Probably because the Urumi is too dangerous to be practiced. Any absence of control will deal self harm to severe levels. Today, it's taught only to a specific warrior caste, I think...
