Campus Conflict - USA

Jan 2007Students at American universities are being asked to spy on their professors. Campus Watch, a pro-Israeli lobby group, relies on student informers to expose 'anti-Semitic' academics."There's a right wing effort across America today to silence any criticism of Israel", complains Prof Joseph Massad. He was singled out for criticism by Campus Watch after he pointed out that Israel has a large number of laws which discriminate between Jewish and non-Jewish citizens. "A member ofCongress immediately called on Colombia University to fire me", he recalls. "New York City Council called a special meeting about the intimidation of Jewish students at Columbia". Massad's lectures were frequently disrupted by hecklers and Campus Watch is now putting pressure on the university not to renew his contract. Campus Watch pays particular attention to professors who are up for promotion or review. Their biggest success to date has been forcing Yale to withdraw their job offer to an academic who accused the White House of; "deliberately misleading the US public" over Iraq. Now, they are lobbying for Congress to take control of funding for Middle Eastern Studies. This would give Congress the ability to end programmes run by professors who criticise government policies.

Israel kills hundreds of non-combatant Palis for every Israeli killed by Qassam rockets. You do realize this?

Have a moment of clarity, please. Don't vote for that demagogue Bibi in Feb.

Israle has completely lost its way ever since Likud murdered Rabin and you Israelis handed over power to them

The average Israeli does not like Qassam rockets hitting his towns from gangs of theocrats with stated eradicationist intentions--especially after we have withdrawn from that area. I did not like Katyusha hitting my favourite aunt's apartment building in Haifa in 2006, so I rushed home from New York and came back to reserve duty. What do you think? There is cause and there is response.

So tell me, are you an anarchist? By that I am specifically asking are you always opposed to any nation-state and desire one world with no borders anywhere? Because if you convince me that is the case, then I accept your critique of Zionism as making distinctions between Jews and nonJews(I don't agree, but I accept). But I think you champion Palestinian Arab nationalism--no? Don't you see this as hypocricy? You support the dismantling of the one Jewish state in favoour of a 23d Arab state.

I might be willing to concede that Israel may have violated intn'l law solely in the case of Golan Heights (which was almost universally recognised as sovereign Syrian territory prior to 1967)-but Israel still has not formally annexed it-although by imposing Israeli law on it, it has de facto annexed it. We discussed the nuance before of de facto annexation-I am not sure you were paying attention. Technically speaking, West Bank is not occupied but "disputed"-as Jordan had illegally annexed it.
