I like this, Windsor McCay was a great animator, but I think it was Disney who really took this and give it its 'boost'.. I think Disney made stuff like this relate to kids and adults. Whereas, in my opinion, Gertie the Dinosaur might have was used as a sort of after dinner entertainment?

It's also important to note that Gertie was originally shown as a part of McCay's vaudeville act in which the live action McCay would interact with his cartoon creation. Good as this film is, it's barely an echo of the real thing!

that's not entirely true. McCay was a notable early animator but the one who pretty much introduced "frame by frame" or at least made it noticeable was Blackton with his "lightening sketches"
