Not everything has to cumlinate into a money making scheme, you can do this for just fun, a hobby if you will.

Also you have to consider that America has an awful lot of people than other countries so it makes sence that there are a lot of athletes from there, more people = higher chance of having award winners, if anything the Olympics should be done on an individual basis, but I guess some people just love competing for their respective countries, god bless patriotism :)
