Hm, my definition of an takedown is: bring the other to the ground while you have them controlled the full way towards the ground and on the ground.
You can still be standing though.

the higher kata's have all aikido-like takedowns and controlling technique's in them.
you keep standing while the other goes down, while you still control them when they're on the ground and follow up with either an kick to the groin/neck/head/solar plexus or some hits to one of those places.

I guess then it depends on how each instructor will teach, as well as your definition of "takedown". As I have come to know it, from my limited experience in Judo(a little over a year), takedowns are techniques where you force your opponent to the ground with your body and follow them down. Which is very different from say a sweep or a throw. I would agree that sweeps are plentiful depending on your body type and how your teacher interprets the kata.

i get what you mean, but i prefer non-contact. i think it's even harder, because you have to get REALLY close, but you're not allowed to touch the opponent, so you need strong body control. :)
