He's jewish, very influenced by Jewish and Catholic mysticism. Lithuania was a hotbed of Jewish mysticism. Many comment about Lnny being a Canadian but he is so much a Montrealer of the time and most Canadians are very Anglo and different from what the French and Jewish people of Montreal were back then. People learned a lot about each other's cultures when they slept around and "confessed" to each other. Different era.

Thanks for the sound quality here. So many beautiful songs on YouTube are ruined by crappy sound. Those of us who hitchhiked across the US or took the Canadian train from Montreal to Vancouver know what comfort travelers gave to each other and the soul-warming comfort prairie women gave. Heart to heart.

My mum had "Songs of Leonard Cohen" in the linen closet, in '78 or so. I found it and listened to it. Still have the LP...maybe the worse for wear, but still have it, lyric sheet too.Of course it's morose and sad and self-absorbed. It was a different time. It's still true to itself and still worth hearing. And it was a time and place where Canada didn't have to demand acknowledgement of its voice, because Canada was heard through words and deeds. Just sayin'.
